Site and Chat Moderating

by
Okay, this has been building up for a while, so I'm going to speak my mind about these issues knowing that this writing will invite a multitude of trolls, whiners, and the peanut gallery in general to chime in with their opinion.

We do a lot of work here on this site. You do not hear about 99% of our daily activities because it involves technical aspects of the site like managing our server farm or deploying minor code patches that you usually don't even notice (unless they are major new features). We appoint mods to help out with moderating chat because it takes a lot of effort to handle all aspects of running this site and no single admin (there are currently 4 admins - including myself - not counting chat moderators though) can handle every issue that comes up every time.

The most annoying thing for me personally is that our chat currently notifies the entire room when disciplinary action is taken against a user (like "User was muted/kicked/moved to the blacklist and kicked out by <admin or mod's name>. We are changing this very soon. Very very soon. The reason why this is annoying isn't because we want to get away with being facist dictators who can fuck anyone over at any time we feel like (actually we can already do that, heh) - it's because it kills the mood in a chat room every time those notices appear telling everyone we took action, and without fail, every time this happens - you guessed it - the Peanut Gallery chimes in with commentary and it frequently leads to random users, who were silent up until then and are not in any way concerned with the person who got booted or the admin or mod who did the booting, getting all riled up and saying how they think the rules should be enforced and what they think the rules should be.

The most common thing I see people griping about every single day is "oh so they can boot someone just for doing (insert something they feel is mundane and not kick-worthy) but they won't take care of the real bad people which are (insert something they feel is the worst type of person on the site/chat)."

You will no longer see messages saying we took action. Most of you will probably forget that there was even a nuissance or trouble-maker stirring up any shit when they silently drop away from chat without any indication that we took action. This type of silent enforcement is coming soon, but not just yet. Give us another week or two as we have a million important things to work on besides just chat features.

When we boot someone who is doing really bad (illegal) stuff on the site or in the chat, the last thing we want is for everyone to gawk and stare like it's some kind of car wreck and you want to see all the gross details up close. These aren't the droids you're looking for. Move along.

The other thing is trolls. I'm a troll and you all know it. It's fun to get people going sometimes. There are limits to it. Many people have nothing better to do than just troll the establishment as hard as they can, though, and they want to force our hand and kick/ban them so they feel acknowledged. This is called feeding the trolls. I'm not saying it's okay to just harass and degrade people and that we aren't going to do a thing about it. I'm saying that your opinion of *how* we should do something about it is not in line with our experience of how to handle trolls. There are ways to troll the trolls without feeding them. It's an artform. It ain't easy. Also: your mom ain't easy.

Go enjoy the site. Enjoy the chat. Meet like-minded people. Don't come here just to grill us on how we should be enforcing our own rules or to draw attention to people who break the rules. We will deal with those people. Really!

Now let the flamewar of opinionated commentary on what I just wrote here begin.
